Operational Guide
Calculating Your Real Hourly Rate
Your "Salary" is a vanity metric. Your "Real Hourly Wage" determines your actual quality of life. A $100k job working 60 hours/week pays less than a $70k job working 40 hours.
The Equation
Real Wage = (Annual Salary - Commute Cost) / (Hours Worked + Commute Time)
Step 1: The Denominator (Total Time)
Most salaried employees underestimate their time commitment.
- Contract Hours: 40 hours/week.
- Shadow Hours: Checking slack at night? (Add 5 hours).
- Commute: 45 mins each way? (Add 7.5 hours).
- True Total: 52.5 Hours/Week.
Step 2: The Numerator (Net Yield)
- Gross Salary: $100,000.
- Commute Expense: Gas/Train ($2,500/yr).
- Professional Wardrobe/Lunch: Variable.
The Comparison
Job A: $100k, Remote, 40hrs.
Rate: $48/hr.
Job B: $130k, On-site, 60hrs total commitment.
Rate: $41/hr.
Job B pays less per unit of your life sold, despite the higher sticker price.
